Questions About Zanzibar

Minimum 4–5 nights total. Ideal itinerary:

  • 1–2 nights in Stone Town (for culture, food, history)
  • 4–5 nights on a beach (for relaxation and recovery)

Less than 4 nights feels rushed after factoring in international/domestic flights and transfers. More than 7 nights often leads to “island fatigue” Zanzibar is small, and there’s limited variety beyond beach lounging and a few key excursions. Pro tip: Most safari-goers do 7-day safari + 5-night Zanzibar combo, it’s the sweet spot.

It depends entirely on which coast you choose:

  • North Coast (Nungwi, Kendwa): Minimal tide variation, swim anytime, all day.
  • East/Southeast Coast (Matemwe, Paje, Jambiani): Extreme tides, at low tide, the ocean recedes up to 1 km, leaving shallow pools or exposed reef. You’ll need to check tide charts (your hotel provides them) and plan swimming for high tide only.  If guaranteed swimming matters more than seclusion, choose the north coast

Yes, Zanzibar is very safe from violent crime. However: “Beach boys” (young men selling tours, souvenirs, or companionship) can be persistent, especially in Nungwi and Stone Town.

They’re not dangerous, just persistent. A firm “hapana” (Swahili for “no”) usually works. Women traveling solo may get more attention.
Solution: Stay at properties with private beach access or gated compounds to minimize interactions.

Stick to ONE beach area unless you’re staying 8+ nights.

  • Transfers between beaches cost $60–100 and take 1.5–2 hours each way.
  • Packing/unpacking and reorienting wastes a full day.
  • Exception: Combining Stone Town (1–2 nights) + one beach area (4–5 nights) makes perfect sense, it blends culture and relaxation.
  • June–October: Best overall, dry, sunny, low humidity, calm seas. Peak season = higher prices.
  • December–February: Also excellent, hotter and slightly windier (great for kite surfing in Paje).
  • March–May: Long rains, some lodges close, but you’ll find deals if you don’t mind occasional downpours.
  • November: Short rains, unpredictable but can offer great value.
