Machame Route 8 Days Trek

Tour Overview

The Machame Route doesn’t rush you. While shorter itineraries exist, this seven-day journey understands something essential: Kilimanjaro isn’t conquered through speed, it’s earned through acclimatization, respect for altitude, and the willingness to let the mountain set the pace.

You’ll begin in rainforest so dense the canopy filters sunlight into green twilight. By day three, you’ll traverse the Shira Plateau where volcanic rock stretches toward horizons that seem impossibly distant. The Barranco Wall—a 257-meter scramble that looks intimidating from below and feels exhilarating once you’re on it—teaches you that perceived limits often dissolve when you simply take the next step.

Then the landscape strips itself bare. Moorlands give way to alpine desert where only the hardiest lichens survive. The air thins. Your breath becomes something you notice. At this altitude, even experienced trekkers move slowly, not from weakness, but because the mountain demands it.

Summit night begins around midnight. Headlamps form a chain of lights ascending into darkness. The temperature drops below freezing. Your guide sets a pace that feels almost comically slow, “pole pole” (slowly, slowly) because at 5,500 meters, rushing guarantees failure. Then the sun breaks over the curve of the earth, illuminating glaciers that have persisted here for millennia despite everything suggesting they shouldn’t exist at this latitude.

At 5,895 meters, Uhuru Peak isn’t just Africa’s highest point, it’s the moment when months of wondering if you could actually do this dissolve into the certainty that you did.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – Welcome to Arusha

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be met by our professional guide and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. Settle into your comfortable accommodation, where you can enjoy essential amenities such as a cozy room, hot showers, a swimming pool, and WiFi. In the evening, you will meet your climbing team for a detailed briefing on the trek ahead, covering safety procedures, gear checks, and expectations for the climb.

Note: Hotel check-in begins at 2:00 PM

Day 2: Trekking from Machame Gate to Machame Camp

After breakfast, you will depart Arusha and drive to Machame Gate, the official entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park. Here, your guide will assist with permits and registration before beginning your trek through lush rainforest, home to black-and-white colobus monkeys and a variety of bird species. The path is often damp, so rain gear is essential.

As you gradually ascend to Machame Camp (3,000m / 9,843 ft), the vegetation transitions from thick rainforest to moss-covered trees. Upon arrival, the campsite will be set up, and a warm dinner will be served to replenish your energy.

  • Trekking Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)
  • Trekking Time: 5-6 hours

Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Today’s trek takes you out of the rainforest and into the moorland zone, where you will experience stunning views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau. The terrain becomes steeper as you ascend toward Shira Camp (3,750m / 12,303 ft).

After reaching camp, enjoy a hot meal and rest before an acclimatization hike towards Lava Tower at 4,120m (13,517 ft). This hike is crucial for adjusting to the high altitude and increasing your chances of a successful summit.

  • Trekking Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)
  • Trekking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Acclimatization Hike: 2 km (1.2 miles)

Day 4: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Today is an important acclimatization day. After breakfast, you will trek toward Lava Tower (4,600m / 15,088 ft), where you will have lunch and spend time at high altitude before descending to Barranco Camp (3,900m / 12,795 ft). The descent to lower altitude improves acclimatization and reduces altitude sickness symptoms.

At Barranco Camp, you will be greeted by the majestic Barranco Wall, a towering rock face that you will climb the following morning. Despite its steep appearance, the climb is more of a scramble and does not require technical skills.

  • Trekking Distance: 11 km (6.8 miles)
  • Trekking Time: 6-8 hours

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Today begins with the thrilling climb up Barranco Wall, offering spectacular panoramic views from the top. The climb takes about an hour and is considered a highlight of the Machame Route.

After conquering the Wall, the trek continues through rolling terrain, with short ascents and descents leading to Karanga Camp (3,995m / 13,106 ft). Here, you will enjoy a hot lunch and take part in an acclimatization hike to 4,270m (14,009 ft) before returning to camp.

  • Trekking Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)
  • Trekking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Acclimatization Hike: 2.5 km (1.5 miles)

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

After breakfast, you will continue the ascent toward Barafu Camp (4,673m / 15,331 ft), the final base camp before summit night. This segment is shorter but involves a steady climb through rocky terrain.

Upon arrival, take time to rest, hydrate, and mentally prepare for the midnight summit attempt. An acclimatization hike to Kosovo Camp (4,870m / 15,977 ft) is available for those feeling strong.

  • Trekking Distance: 6 km (3.7 miles)
  • Trekking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Acclimatization Hike: 2 km (1.2 miles)

Day 7: Summit to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Millennium Camp

The summit push begins at midnight, ensuring that you reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,341 ft) at sunrise. The climb is challenging due to steep inclines, cold temperatures, and thin air, but the reward is breathtaking—the highest point in Africa.

After taking photos at the summit, you will descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing to Millennium Camp (3,800m / 12,467 ft) for a well-deserved sleep.

  • Trekking Distance: 15.5 km (9.6 miles)
  • Trekking Time: 7-12 hours

Day 8: Descent to Mweka Gate

The final stretch of the journey takes you through lush montane forest as you descend to Mweka Gate (1,640m / 5,379 ft). Upon arrival, you will receive a summit certificate to commemorate your achievement before being transferred back to your hotel for a relaxing stay.

  • Trekking Distance: 12 km (7.4 miles)
  • Trekking Time: 4-5 hours

Day 9: Departure from Tanzania

After a restful night at your hotel, enjoy breakfast before being transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward journey. If you have a late flight, an extended hotel stay can be arranged at an additional cost.
